For many young drivers, getting their vehicle insured is the most expensive aspect to driving. Over time, with the wrong insurance provider or insurance plan, the cost to insure a vehicle can amount to more that the car’s initial purchase cost plus the cost of gasoline.

Insurance companies determine the cost of the premiums they charge depending upon the risk they incur by taking on the client. Insurance studies have shown that the demographic of young drivers under the age of twenty five are the most risky to insure because of the likelihood that they have to get into accidents and file claims with their insurance company.

The average car weights around 4,000 pounds. If you own a large truck or SUV, it is likely to weigh even more. When you drive your car, you are in control of 4,000 pounds of mass that could be very deadly if not handled properly. Many people die every year in automobile accidents.

Tires are something you’ll want to keep an eye on. Unexpected tire problems ruin some of your most needed plans. You always get a flat on your way to work, or in the middle of nowhere. It’s Murphy’s Law that anything that can go wrong, will. Avoid being a victim of that law. Know what signs you should look for to identify potential tire trouble and get them taken care of.

There are several ways to know that your tires are ready for change. The first, and most obvious, is when you notice them going bald. This is most easily noticed with the depth of the tread. When your tread approaches 1/16th of an inch deep, you know it’s time to get them replaced.

Newer tires have been manufactured with a “tread wear indicator bar.” These are pieces of rubber that run perpendicular to the tread. When new, these bars are barely visible. As they wear down, they become increasingly visible. When you can see multiple of them clearly, it’s time to go get those tires checked out. Aside from the just the tread itself, check the sidewall often for cracks.

If the make and model of the vehicle that a young driver is trying to ensure suggests that speed and aggression will be the hallmarks of the driving career for the individual, the insurance company is less likely to issue a low quote cost.

By having a low powered engine and a good safety rating on the car, a young driver will be able to receive lower insurance costs because the risk of getting in an accident is lowered. In general, a young driver should steer clear of the fast and sporty cars and choose instead the safer and slower cars.

Try to make eye contact with the other drivers and signal to each other when you’re going to drive. Again, it is better to be safe than sorry. Waiting the extra 30 seconds or so for the other drivers to pull forward is better than possibly getting into an accident because you were so concerned about being the first one to go. Another way to ensure safety while driving is to invest in good car insurance.
